Sonya Palkhivala wins gold in 1m; two medals for Canada in the men’s platform event
Tough days are part of the challenge for athletes. Sonya Palkhivala put a difficult start behind her to win the gold medal in the women’s 1m group A event on Saturday at the Junior Invitational Championships in Dresden, Germany. Arnaud Corbeil and Samuel Talbot were second and third on the podium in the group B platform.
Palkhivala took first place with a score of 382.15. She edged out Italy’s Elisa Pizzini (380.30) by just under 2 points to take the gold medal. Great Britain’s Evie Smith (378.15) finished third.
The Quebec diver’s day started off with a bang. Having struggled to sleep the night before, she was not feeling her best in training and during the morning session.
“I only slept about four hours last night. My practice didn’t go well, nor did the first four rounds of the competition. I finally had a chat with my coach and managed to turn things around,” said the Pointe Claire Diving Club representative.
“It gives me a lot of confidence for the 3m tomorrow. Even if I didn’t feel well, I managed to perform when it counted. It proves to me that I can do it even on the toughest days. My body knows what to do,” she added.
In the group B platform, Arnaud Corbeil and Samuel Talbot also reached the podium.
Corbeil scored a total of 448.95 points and won the silver medal. His compatriot, Samuel Tablot, snuck into third place with 440.70 points. Ukraine’s Mark Grytsenko (465.75) was crowned the event’s champion.
Also in action, Dean Calfacacos finished 7th in his preliminary round.
The competition continues on Sunday in Dresden.
