Alistair Nisbet Only 4.55 Points Shy of Bronze
Junior World Championships
Montréal, August 26, 2026 – Alistair Nisbet wrapped up his run at the Junior World Championships in Rijeka, Croatia just 4.55 points short of a podium finish in the boys’ 3m springboard finals (ages 14-15) on Wednesday. The Québécois, who started off in provisional eighth place, mounted a strong comeback to finish fourth.
“My first two dives were not all that great, but then things improved. I finished only 4.55 points short of the bronze medal, so if I had earned a higher score on my first dive, I think I could have easily taken the bronze,” said the 15-year-old athlete, who amassed a total of 445.00 points in the competition.
Miroslav Kiselev of Russia (492.95) took the top spot on the podium, followed by Ian Caleb Nava Gutierrez of Mexico (476.60) and Hayden Brinckley of Australia (449.55). Alberta’s Chase Shaw placed 13th in the preliminary rounds, thus missing out on the finals by only one spot.
For Nisbet, it was his second fourth-place finish in Croatia. He achieved the same result in Sunday’s platform event.
“Even though I didn’t win a medal here, I’m really happy with the way I performed. My fourth-place finishes mean a lot to me, because this is my first major international competition. So I didn’t have any big expectations. I just wanted to make it to the finals. And in that regard, I exceeded my expectations. So I’m really happy with my week!”
Sara-Jade Tessier of Quebec was Canada’s other finalist of the day. She finished ninth in the girls’ Group B platform competition, with 308.20 points. China’s Qingcheng Yuan (404.35) and Yuehan Jiang (368.60) nabbed the top two spots, ahead of Mexico’s Lia Yatzil Cueva Lobato (331.55).
“I had expected to finish in the top six. I was really looking forward to this competition, so I gave it all the energy I had, which was maybe a bit too much for me to be able to dive well,” admitted Tessier, who is competing in her very first world championships.
Maia Jane of British Columbia placed 17th in the preliminaries.
Tessier and Jane will be back in action on Thursday in the 3m springboard event, on the penultimate day of the Junior World Championships.
As for Samuel Talbot and Kash Tarasoff, they will take part in the boys’ Group A platform contest.
