À propos de Jennifer Abel
Jennifer Abel a débuté le plongeon à 5 ans, afin de suivre les traces de son grand-frère, Andy, qui était lui-même un plongeur à cette époque. Elle participe à sa première compétition de plongeon à 6 ans et le coup de foudre est instantané.
Elle prendra part à sa première compétition internationale senior en 2006, au Grand Prix de Madrid où elle remporta une médaille d’argent au 10m synchro avec Carol-Ann Ware. Deux ans plus tard, elle surprend tout le monde en terminant deuxième au 3m aux essais olympiques, décrochant ainsi son billet pour les Jeux de Beijing 2008. À 16 ans, elle devient l’une des plus jeunes plongeuses canadiennes à représenter le pays aux olympiques.
Quatre ans plus tard, elle marque l’histoire à nouveau en décrochant une médaille de bronze aux côtés de la légende du plongeon Émilie Heymans lors des Jeux olympiques de Londres 2012. Avec ce podium au 3 mètres synchro, elles deviennent les premières médaillées du Canada à ces jeux.
Après deux quatrièmes positions à Rio 2016, elle terminera sa carrière olympique à Tokyo avec brio avec une médaille d’argent au 3 mètres synchro avec Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu. Au-delà de ces résultats olympiques, Jennifer aura récolté entre 2011 et 2019, dix médailles des Championnats du monde de la FINA, devant ainsi l’athlète aquatique du Canada avec le plus grand nombre de podiums à cette compétition, dépassant les records d’Alexandre Despatie et du nageur Ryan Cochrane.
Championne à maintes reprises des Jeux du Commonwealth, des Jeux Panaméricains, de la Série mondiale et des Grands Prix FINA, Jennifer Abel aura marqué l’histoire du sport canadien et la communauté du plongeon international à tout jamais avec un cumul de 130 médailles internationales en quinze ans.
Reconnue pour sa puissance phénoménale, Jennifer est l’une des rares femmes au monde à exécuter le “double vrille”, un plongeon normalement réservé aux hommes.
Jennifer adore essayer de nouveaux restaurants et a une faiblesse pour les chips salée. Accro au shopping, elle ne fait jamais de grosses dépenses sans consulter sa mère d’abord.
