Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Saint-Raphaël, France – Day 2
Molly Carlson and Jessica Macaulay finished on the podium on Saturday at the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series stop in Saint-Raphaël, France. Carlson took home a silver medal while Macaulay won bronze. Rhiannan Iffland of Australia won gold at the first stop on the tour.
“Both girls on the podium is beyond what I was expecting in the first competition so it’s looking bright for the rest of the season,” said Stéphane Lapointe, Diving Canada’s National Team Coach.
Carlson (Thunder Bay, ON), who was competing in her first cliff diving event, finished with a combined score of 313.30.
“I think it was such an amazing journey preparing for this with Stéphane and Jess and to finally come out here and just show the world what we’ve been working on was a dream come true,” said Carlson.
The podium finish means the 22-year-old could get future invites on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series tour this season.
“I think travelling the world this year, with such an amazing team, we can really show that Team Canada is coming out strong this 2021 season,” she said. “I think being able to just show who we are at the next stops would be a dream come true.”
Macaulay, a native of Great Yarmouth, U.K., was representing Canada for the first time in her career. The 28-year-old holds dual citizenship and joined Team Canada in January.
She finished with a cumulative score of 300.55 on Saturday to secure a podium finish.
“Coming into this competition in France, I felt super confident, having been able to train on 20 metres since January having moved to Canada. Training at the INS has made me feel very prepared and very confident,” Macaulay said. “I stood up on that platform and I was not worried about my dives at all.
“It was an adjustment coming to France and having to dive outside again, but that was all super exciting, having not been able to dive in a Red Bull competition since September of 2019. Coming here, I had a lot of adaptations to make, having been only diving in an indoor pool for the last six months, but I felt very prepared and confident with my 20 metre dives, and I felt very supported with my support system of Molly, Stephane and Olivier [Morneau-Ricard].”
The next stop on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series tour is in August in Oslo, Norway.
