Two medals for Canada in Dresden!
April 28, 2023 – Sonya Palkhivala and Julianne Boisvert won silver in the 3 m synchro A&B event on Friday at the Junior Invitational Championships in Dresden. Arnaud Corbeil was also on the podium. He won bronze in the men’s 3m group B.
Palkhivala and Boisvert of Quebec scored 252.93 points.
“I think the way we worked together got us where we are today. We talk to each other to figure things out and we have a habit of filming each other to work on corrections. I think all of that has helped,” said Julianne Boisvert.
“I’m really happy with what we were able to do today,” added Palkhivala. “We kept a good attitude throughout the competition and kept our hopes up. This is a great way to start the weekend for me.”
The battle was very close throughout the competition. Sonya Palkhivala was following the scoreboard while hiding the eyes of her teammate who prefers not to look at the results until after the event.
“I could see that there was only one point difference all the time. It was so close,” she said.
The duo managed to work very independently during training before the competition. With their coaches held up at poolside by the men’s events, they were able to help each other during their dryland training to be ready for their final.
“It was nice to see that we could do this on our own. It allowed us to work as a team and get in the mood for what was coming up,” said Palkhivala.
One of the Canadian team’s coaches, Aaron Brown, was keen to point out the quality of the dives by the two Quebecers which was impressive.
Arnaud Corbeil in bronze, one-tenth of second place
In action in the men’s 3 m group B, Arnaud Corbeil climbed to the third step of the podium. However, he came very close to the gold medal, and even closer to the silver medal.
The battle for the top of the podium was so close that the winner was only 0.35 point ahead of Corbeil and the silver medallist 0.10 point.
Also in action in the men’s 3m group B, Luc Goertzen took 4th place, Samuel Talbot finished 13th and Dean Calfacacos 17th.
In the men’s 1m group A, Olivier Gauthier placed 4th and Chris Booler 6th.
