A first national title for Amélie-Laura Jasmin

January 26, 2025 (Gatineau) – Amélie-Laura Jasmin and Benjamin Tessier were both crowned Canadian champions on Sunday in Gatineau.
It was a weekend of firsts for Amélie-Laura Jasmin. She competed for the first time with her new coach Hui Tong. She topped the podium in the Women’s 1m on Friday for the first time at a National Championship, and repeated the feat on Sunday, taking top honours in the Women’s 3m.
The CAMO diver was awarded a total score of 317.80 for her five dives in the final.
“I’m really happy. It went really well on 1m and 3m. There are still a few things to work on, but overall I’m really happy with my weekend. What’s more, it was my first competition with my new coach, Hui and I am proud of that. I’m happy to have broken the ice,” commented Amélie-Laura Jasmin.
Her score of 317.80 qualifies her to represent Canada at international competitions this season.
“I’m certainly happy with how things went this weekend. I’m going to try to sort out a minor back injury that is preventing me from training as much as I’d like, but I’m really happy to be able to represent Canada again this year. Last year was my first time and now I’m happy to come with more experience,” explained Jasmin.
Sonya Palkhivala (PCDC) won the silver medal with a score of 283.50, ahead of Léa Flamand (262.70), from Club de plongeon ARO.
In the Men’s 10m, we witnessed a great battle between teammates and friends Matt Cullen (Envol) and Benjamin Tessier (CAMO).
Yihua Li’s two protégés exchanged first place a few times. Benjamin Tessier finished 1st in the morning preliminaries and eventually won the final with a score of 438.55.
“There were ups and downs, but I managed to come out alive with a result that was still good. There are plenty of things to work on though. I’ll be working on those over the next few weeks,” said Benjamin Tessier.
He appreciates the healthy competition between himself and Matt Cullen.
“You’re always pushing your limit. There’s never a moment when you let up. You always want to push yourself to be even better. We’ve been pushing each other since we were like 6, so it’s super motivating.”
Cullen took 2nd place with 402.40 points. Ciro Mejia (TDA) completed the podium with a score of 373.05.
