Three Medals for Canada on Final day of Pan Am Qualifying Championships
February 26, 2023 – Canada added three medals to its haul at the 2023 Pan American Qualifying Championships in Leon, Mexico, on Sunday. These awards are in addition to the three podium finishes on Friday to bring the country’s total to six medals.
Pamela Ware triumphed on the 3m springboard with a score of 333.75. She managed to stay consistent throughout the final and beat out Arantxa Chavez of Mexico (327.60). The Montreal diver had also dominated the preliminaries.
Canada was also represented on the third step of the podium in the women’s 3 m. Margo Erlam won the bronze medal with a score of 304.40.
One quota spot for the Pan American Games in Santiago was still up for grabs for Canada in women’s 3 m, the other having been won at the last World Championships. To reach it, at least one diver had to be among the first three of the final. So it’s mission accomplished!
Margo Erlam has just returned from surgery, which took her several weeks to get back into shape. This bronze medal is proof that she is on the right track.
“The improvement I saw between the preliminaries and the final was incredible. I felt really good! It was like I was back to normal. It’s really encouraging for the future,” said Erlam, who trains at the Saskatoon Diving Club.
“It was so great to see Pam dive today. It was amazing for her to win. She did such a great job diving the final. It’s definitely a mission accomplished for us here in Mexico,” added Erlam.
In the men’s 10m, Nathan Zsombor-Murray won the bronze medal. The athlete who trains in Pointe-Claire obtained a score of 473.50. Cuba’s Carlos Ramos Rodriguez (515.30) dominated the competition. Mexico’s Carlos Ramos Rodriguez earned 484.85 points and took second place on the podium.
The other Canadian in the competition, Rylan Wiens (Saskatoon), took 4th place with a score of 441.40.
These medals are in addition to those won by Éloïse Bélanger (gold on 10m), Renée Batalla (silver on 10m) and Cédric Fofana (bronze on 1m) on Friday in Leon. Canada finishes second in the country rankings with six medals, behind Mexico.
