Windsor: Pamela Ware repeats as Summer Nationals champion
Pamela Ware of Montreal successfully defended her title Friday on women’s three-metre to open the 2019 Speedo Summer Nationals Championships in diving.
The 26-year-old Olympian didn’t flinch in her five dives in the final earning 7.5’s and 8.0’s, nothing lower or higher, in each round to finish with 348.80 points. Mia Vallée of Beaconsfield, Que., followed with 307.50 and Olivia Chamandy of Montreal was third at 297.35.
‘’I had tough prelims so in the final I just wanted to do my dives the way I know how to do them,’’ said Ware. ‘’Between prelims and final, I had a nice talk with my coach he got my head straight and got me out of my worries.’’
In the preliminaries, Ware missed her reverse dive but came back strong in the final to land it cleanly.
‘’In previous years the reverse was usually my best dive but this year it’s been really difficult,’’ she said. ‘’But I feel it’s getting better and better. My inward dive has also been way better this year in competition.’’
Earlier Victor Povzner of Maple, Ont., won an exciting men’s one-metre final with 359.85. He edged Peter Thach Mai of Montreal second at 358.55 and Ryan Grover of Victoria third at 350.30.
‘’I was a bit undecided about doing the one-metre today,’’ said Povzner. ‘’I took it as an enjoyable event rather than something I should pressure myself with. To get the win was a bonus.’’
Thach Mai earned the two best total scores of the day with 76.50 points on his twisting dive and 66.00 on his reverse. However he made noticeable mistakes on two other dives. Meanwhile Povzner earned similar scores on his six dives in the final, his best a 63.55 for his inward in the last round.
On men’s 10-m synchro, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., produced an excellent performance earning as much as 8.5’s on each of their six dives in the final to win the gold medal with 428.31 points.
Competition continues through to Sunday at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre.
