Winter Nationals come to Victoria this weekend!
January 26, 2023 (Victoria) – The country’s top divers will be in Victoria this weekend to compete in the Winter National Championships. A total of six events will be held at Commonwealth Place in Saanich, BC.
Athletes will compete for national titles on 1m, 3m and 10m. The event will also serve as a qualification for the Pan Am Qualification event to be held in Mexico in February.
Bryden Hattie will be looking to defend his titles in the 1 m and 3 m. He dominated both events at the Summer Nationals, held at the same pool last May.
On the women’s side, Mia Vallée, the reigning Canadian champion in 1m and 3m, will be looking to do the same. The athlete from the CAMO diving club had an exceptional season in 2022. She won two medals at the World Championships and reached the podium three times at the Commonwealth Games.
On the platform, Rylan Wiens is the national title holder. He was also a standout last season. At the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Wiens made history with his partner Nathan Zsombor-Murray. They teamed up to win the bronze medal in the 10 m synchro event and became the first Canadians to reach the podium at this event on the men’s side.
Wiens also won two medals at the Commonwealth Games, including silver in the 10m individual.
At the recent Summer Nationals, Renee Batalla caused a surprise by winning the women’s platform title. This earned her a spot at the Commonwealth Games. At the World Junior Championships held in Montreal in December, Batalla also reached the second step of the podium.
